Product Description

The latest addition to the Veritas family of low-angle bench planes is the state-of-the-art pure smoothing plane. It is the plane to use for the final finish on surfaces, especially woods of difficult grain patterns. It also complements the low-angle jack plane.

Veritas have combined the generous width and weight of a dedicated smoother with the versatile inner workings of a low-angle bevel-up plane. The 12° bed angle, coupled with the 38° blade bevel, yields an effective cutting angle of 50°, this is commonly known as a York pitch. This is an ideal starting angle for minimizing tear-out when working difficult wood. It is easy to create a higher micro-bevel angle for very difficult grains.

The ductile cast iron body is fully stress-relieved, and has a 12° bed angle similar to a low-angle block plane. Accurately machined, the sole is flat. The adjustable mouth can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out or opened for heavier cuts. A stop-screw in the throat adjusts to whatever mouth opening you find ideal for chip breaking and chip clearance. This lets you open the mouth fully for blade removal (for honing) and replacement, yet quickly restores your exact mouth setting. The large wooden front knob and rear handle provide both comfort and excellent control. The adjustment mechanism, with its combined feed and lateral adjustment knob, makes blade setting easy and accurate. Set screws prevent the blade from shifting, but allow full lateral adjustment.

It weighs in at just under 5lb, with an exceptionally low center of gravity. We have dubbed this plane a 164½ H. It is an excellent choice for even the most demanding reversing grains. The coffin-shaped body has a sole length of 10". Includes a 38° PM-V11 blade. The blade is the same size as our low-angle jack plane, allowing blades of various bevel angles to be interchanged between planes.

"This is a very good smoothing plane. I bought this from a recommendation from a friend. It has taken me a couple of weeks to adjust to a bevel-up smoother, but I am now overall quite happy with this. What I really liked is that this plane takes the same size blades as the low-angle jack plane from veritas. This is actually quite useful for me as I have both, and I have 3 blades amongst these planes that I can mix and match as per my needs (I have two with a high angle of attack and one at 30 degrees for a low angle of attack). I also really like that it feels wider and heavier than previous smoothers I used, which in combination to the low-angle blade I have makes using this plane less tiring. The adjustable mouth is a really easy to use, and WAY easier to do than moving the frog on my old smoother. I also really like that there are screws to keep the plane iron from moving laterally in use (which I found more needed on the jack plane, but it's still useful here). I really liked that it came super-flat already, and with the blade needing just a final honing. Honestly, the only down-side to this is the price, and (very subjectively) is that I prefer the classic look of lie nielsen planes. It's definitely more expensive than some of the older second hand planes that you can find and that do a pretty good job. On the other hand, it looks to be the cheapest of the premium planes brands, and the quality is amazing. I feel comfortable in saying that this will last me a lifetime and I'm pretty sure my sons will get it and it'll still work like a charm. Highly recommended. If you're not familiar with low-angle smoothers, just make sure you have a plate iron that creates a higher effective angle of attack (either 45 or 50 degrees) and a barely open mouth, and you'll be amazed."
