The supply of these lovely tools into the marketplace is frustratingly haphazard (yes even before Covid) so whilst we apologise for this it is not for want of trying on our behalf to try and get stock.

Back in the day when these Chris Pye sets were first launched the idea was to split the tools into just 3 "categories" of carving tools from Auriou - Basic tools (this section), tools for letter carving and short fishtail tools (see separate sections).

In truth as of the Autumn of 2020 we have pretty much given up on the idea of having complete sets but one lives in hope! Certainly we don't anticipate any "full sets" until late spring 2021 at the earliest.

You can of course pick n mix to build up your own sets from the tools we have available in stock (from the 3 tool lists) but we cannot commit to promising to fill in any missing gaps in the future (although we will do our best).

We have had the V parting tool on back order for over 2 years now!

So the tools pictured are what we have in stock at the current time. In some cases we are well stock, in others we are very low in stock and this naturally changes daily/weekly.

In total, there are 17 tools that make up Chris Pye's full selection of "Basic" carving tools:

SWEEP 3 (series #3) - 5mm (3/16"), 8mm (5/16"), 14mm (1/2"), 20mm (3/4") & 26mm (1")

SWEEP 6 (series #6) - 5mm (3/16"), 8mm (5/16"), 14mm (1/2"), 20mm (3/4") & 26mm (1")

SWEEP 9 (series #9) - 5mm (3/16"), 8mm (5/16"), 14mm (1/2"), 20mm (3/4") & 26mm (1")

60 deg. V tool x 10mm (3/8") & 10mm (3/8") Skew chisel

Auriou woodcarving tools have been among British Master Carver Chris Pye's favourite tools since he began carving. The blades are forged by beating out a blank of steel to length before spring hammering the cross-section profile. This creates a very resilient grain structure in the metal which, when hardened to Rockwell 58c, underpins their great edge-holding properties.

The wider gouges have the older, 'allongee' style of blade that splays from the shoulder: these are lighter to use, the corners are more available for cutting, and their thin walls are of a uniform thickness.

Auriou produce some of the finest carving tools being traditionally made today. Slender octagonal ash handles with polished brass tapered ferrules.

The tools pictured are what we have in stock at the current time. In some cases we are well stocked, in others we are very low in stock and this naturally changes daily/weekly.

Please feel free to mix n match from the Chris Pye lettering and short fishtail gouge ranges of tools.
