Veritas No.4 Smoothing Plane
Ref: 05P2601

The No.4 smoothing plane is the most commonly used bench plane because of its versatility. It is the perfect size for general smoothing, finish work, trimming parts and other odd jobs at the bench. It has the mass required to cut smoothly but is also light enough to avoid fatigue in use. The sole is 9-1/2" long and the blade is 2" wide. Weight is 4 lb 6 oz.
Like all the Veritas® bench planes it incorporates a unique frog that extends all the way to the sole of the plane to eliminate blade chatter and to allow the user to quickly adjust the mouth as required. It can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out, or opened for heavier cuts. All of this is done without having to remove the lever cap or anything else from the plane; simply loosen a pair of screws and dial the desired opening with a thumbwheel.

The body and frog are ductile cast iron and are fully stress relieved. The wings and sole are accurately machined and surface ground. The extra-large sides make for very stable shooting.

The blade is a full 1/8" thick and made of A2 tool steel. Both the hardwood front knob and tote are generous in size for a comfortable grip with good control. The combined feed and lateral adjust lever make blade setting easy and accurate.

Veritas No.4½ Smoothing Plane + PM-V11 Blade
Ref: 05P2301

The Veritas smoothing plane introduces a completely new concept in bench planes, a frog that extends all the way to the sole of the plane. Not only is this the most effective design to reduce blade chatter (by providing complete blade support), but it allows a user to quickly adjust the mouth as required. It can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out, or opened for heavier cuts. All of this is done without having to remove the lever cap or anything else from the plane; simply loosen a pair of screws and dial the desired opening with a thumbwheel. The carefully machined fit between frog and sole makes the process fast and accurate.

The 2-7/8" x 10" ductile cast iron body (both more durable and more stable than grey iron) is fully stress relieved, machined, and surface ground on both the sides and sole for accuracy. The sole is guaranteed to be flat to 0.003" concave, never convex. The sides are square to the sole within 15 minutes (1/4°). The extra-large side sides make for very stable shooting.

The 2-3/8" wide PM-V11 blade is a full 1/8" thick. The thick blade, combined with the full-depth frog, virtually eliminates chatter under all conditions; you can even hear the difference while planing.

Both the hardwood front knob and tote are generous in size for a comfortable grip with good control. The combined feed and lateral adjust lever make blade setting easy and accurate.

At just over 5 lb, this has the mass needed for an effective smoother. The net effect of all these improvements is a new standard in plane design.

Veritas No.4 Smoothing Plane + PM-V11 Blade

Veritas No.5¼W Bench Plane + PM-V11 Blade
Ref: 05P2401

The No.5¼ was often referred to as a junior jack. At 12" long, it fell between the No.4 smoothing plane at 10" long and the No.5 jack plane at 14" long. This 5¼W varies from the traditional No.5¼ in numerous ways, most significant are the the 2" wide blade (rather than 1¾") and the mouth is 4½" back from the nose compared with 3½" for the original.

This extra length of sole in front of the blade makes it much easier to cut accurately because the extra-long nose makes it easier to maintain the sole flush to the material at the start of a cut. In fact, the combination of the mouth location and the very sensitive feed adjustment lets this plane serve as a jointer for most cabinet work, just as a No.5 is used as a jointer.

The No.5¼W is an ideal complement to the Veritas No.4½ for bench work. Like the No.4½, it is made from ductile cast iron and has the same adjustable frog with a combined feed and lateral adjust mechanism that is sturdy, yet sensitive and accurate.

The easily adjusted frog is machined to fit snugly in the plane body and eliminates virtually all blade chatter. Because the frog extends right through to the sole, adjusting the frog to narrow the mouth does not reduce blade support as it does in standard planes of this style.

Veritas No.5W Bench Plane + PM-V11 Blade

Veritas No.6 Fore Plane
Ref: 05P2801

The No.6 fore plane is ideal for smoothing and flattening large surfaces, such as panels, tabletops and workbench tops. The long sole ensures accurate results, as it will not follow the bumps and valleys that a shorter plane would. This is Veritas' largest bench plane, with a sole 18" long and blade 2-3/8" wide. Its weight is just under 6¾ lb.

Like all our bench planes, it incorporates a unique frog that extends all the way to the sole of the plane to eliminate blade chatter and to allow the user to quickly adjust the mouth as required. It can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out, or opened for heavier cuts. All of this is done without having to remove the lever cap or anything else from the plane; simply loosen a pair of screws and dial the desired opening with a thumbwheel.

The body and frog are cast ductile iron and are fully stress relieved. The side walls and sole are accurately machined and surface ground. The extra-large side walls make for stable shooting.

Both the hardwood front knob and tote are generous in size for a comfortable grip with good control. The combined feed and lateral adjust lever makes blade setting easy and accurate.

Veritas Jointer Fence
Ref: 05P3001

Planing a square edge on a board requires a jointer fence, whether you are using an electric jointer or a hand plane.

The Veritas® jointer fence allows you to shoot accurate and consistent square or bevelled edges with most* iron or steel bench planes. The integral rare-earth magnets make it quick and easy to attach or remove the 11" long anodized aluminum fence from either side of all sizes of bench planes, from a smooth plane (#4) to a jointer (#8).

As supplied, the 2" tall guiding face can be used to plane edges perfectly square to the face of your workpiece. It can also be used to shoot angles less than 90° when a bevelled wooden guide is attached to the inside face of the fence.

Veritas PM-V11 Blade 2 3/8" (for No 4 1/2 and 6 planes)
Ref: VP2372

More than two years of research and testing by Veritas went into PM-V11, a new steel alloy. The PM refers to a process known as powder metallurgy. It involves atomising molten metals, cooling and hardening the powder, finally heating it under pressure to form an ingot. PM-V11 is a specific mixture of metals combined into a unique alloy. The resulting steel has a very fine, uniform grain structure. It is inherently more durable than steels produced using ordinary manufacturing processes. Blades made from PM-V11 are highly resistant to dulling or damage from wear and impact. These blades can take a keen edge and hold it through extended use.

PM-V11 is as easy to sharpen as A2 tool steel using water stones or other common sharpening methods. Testing showed that a PM-V11 blade edge lasts at least twice as long in use as an A2 blade.
