Temple Tool Co. Japanese Marking Gauge
Product Description
A Japanese Marking Gauge equipped with two cutters. The cutters can be used independently to score a single line, or together to layout a mortise. The single bevel cutters leave a clean mark, so no blurred lines here. The cutters are firmly held in place by a knurled brass knob on the back of the head but can be easily removed for sharpening.
A simple but effective marking-out tool.
Japanese white oak body.

"The cutters weren't ground to a consistent angle, so didn't mark evenly. Correcting that is fiddly, but once done they can easily be kept sharp with a slip stone. The steel seems good, and there is plenty of length, so in theory you could bend a new cutting edge when the old one wears out.
I ground a curve in the blades so you can lightly score a line with the maximum amount of fence support, then twist the gauge to get the points biting. The large fence is a massive benefit, and it's very comfortable to use.
Setting up for mortices is easiest if you first mark the lines with a chisel, drop the cutters into those marks, then slide fence into position and lock up.
All said, a great marking gauge."
