Red Rose Reproductions Dividers
Product Description
These dividers were designed with a few key objectives in mind. First, they needed to have the ability to be quickly adjusted. Many dividers are fitted with thumb screws used to open and close the arms. This method is fine for some tasks, but falls short when rapid adjustments are needed, such as when using with the sector where adjustments are frequent and over a large range. These are fitted with a friction hinge allowing the legs to be rapidly set anywhere along its range of movement. A thin Teflon washer between the arms provides a smooth, consistent motion throughout the range of movement.
The friction of the hinge is also adjustable. In use, they should be easy to set, but hold position without unintentional movement. This is accomplished by means of a screw and what’s known as a wavy washer at the pivot point. All that is needed to adjust the tension is a straight tipped screwdriver.
The dividers are machined from a pre-hardened alloy known as 4140PH. This steel has a hardness of 28-32 Rc, making the tips less prone to distortion in use, and yet soft enough to be easily dressed if needed.
These dividers are available in two sizes. The smaller size is 5" from the pivot point to the tips, and 5 3/8" long overall. They will comfortably open to a working distance of 6 inches. The larger size is 7½" from the pivot point to the tips, and 7 7/8" long overall, and will work at distances in excess of 9".
The tips come sharp and ready to use out of the box. Red Rose Reproductions recommend slightly blunting the points with a fine stone when using them with the sector. Otherwise, the points can be too “grabby” when locating in the drilled holes in the sector arms.
The dividers are made in the USA. They come packed in a sturdy cardboard box with a fitted insert to keep them out of harm's way. A users guide is included.
About Red Rose Reproductions
Red Rose Reproductions LLC was created in 2014 with an objective to bring resurrected woodworking tools to the market. Daniel R. Schwank, company founder, has made many tools for his own use, and decided that others may appreciate them too. Red Rose Reproductions focuses primarily on moulding planes patterned off mid 18th century British designs. Offerings also have branched into other bench tools and work holding devices.
In October 2017, Dan gave up his work as a tool and die maker to pursue the business full time. He makes a number of his tool offerings in batches and offers them primarily through this web site and tool shows. Some tools, such as hollow and round moulding planes, are generally made to order. He also teaches classes on making hollow and rounds in his shop, which is now relocated in Sterling IL.
Dan’s interest in furniture began with his marriage in 1994, when he was introduced to woodworking by his Father-In-Law. Thus began a journey to build his skill levels and knowledge of furniture design and construction, and later hand tools. As a tool & die maker, Dan found woodworking and tool making to require many of the same skills and approaches to tasks as metal working does. This also made it a natural transition into making tools.
Dan is primarily self taught, although he has taken quite a few classes devoted to 18th century furniture styles and construction techniques, and plane making with Tod Herrli and with input from Larry Williams of Old Street Tool. His approach is a combination of both modern machinery and traditional hand tools, although with plane making, most of the work is done by hand.
Red Rose Reproductions, located in Sterling IL, is modest but well equipped. A lot of effort has been put into keeping the overhead down while at the same time striving to work as efficiently as possible. The result is pricing that is very competitive yet of high quality.
