Product Description

A small carving axe for all sizes of carving.

This stout hand forged carving axe has a 95mm - 100mm (4'') edge - SYMMETRICAL grind (also known as double grind).

The head weight is approximately 475 - 500g.

If striking the poll, do so with a wooden mallet (not a steel hammer).

Handle - hand carved 275mm - 285mm long (just over 11''), faceted, kin dried ash handle.

The leather cover is made by Oscar using Italian leather with solid brass rivets (these are much stronger than cap rivets).

Please note each of these tools are forged, ground and handled by hand which makes each of these beautifully functional edge tools unique.

There will be slight variations between each tool which is part of their beauty but the crucial curves and alignment are consistent for each tool.

Proudly made in Suffolk, UK.

These tools are made in small batches by artisan blacksmith Oscar Rush who will be joining Classic Hand Tools at a couple of our shows this summer/autumn.

If you miss out on a batch, please email sales@classichandtools.com and we will advise when the next batch is due (we anticipate 4 batches per annum).

We also anticipate world wide demand for these side azes and Oscar's other hand forged tools.

Apart from carving axes, side axes and small hand adzes, Classic Hand Tools have commissioned Oscar to make some other edge tools which will make their appearances later on in the year.

Customer Reviews

By Richard Tiley on 24th July 2024
"I was so impressed by his side axe, I thought I ought to give this small carving axe a whirl. The head is light enough to use for long periods but still has enough heft to remove material easily. I do like the faceted handle: it affords consistently angled cuts with ease. I have used it to rough out spoons, chair stretchers and even taken it with me for a couple of overnighter in the woods. In a short time, it has become a firm and versatile friend. Pricey, yes, but worth every penny."
