A Lie-Nielsen No.5 1/2 Jack Plane. Probably the most popular bench plane, and the one that many woodwork teachers recommend starting out with due to its versatility.
The equivalent of a later type Stanley Bedrock No.605½.
- 14 3/4" (375mm) long.
- 2 3/8" (60mm) wide blade. A2 steel.
- Iron body, 7lbs (3.15kg).

"The Lie-Nielsen 5 1/2 Jack plane is a beauty to look at, but that isn't what counts. Pick it up, and the heft, the balance, the instinctive sense that everything about it is based on a long history of care and evolution makes it worth the expense. Buy the best, if you possibly can. I barely could, but I'm glad I did."

"Wonderful plane. Perfect weight and a classic design. I have been after a 5 1/2 for ages and settled on this Lie Nielsen. Factory edge was super sharp and useable from the box, but as always a quick hone including adding a secondary edge is all that is needed to get it perfectly sharp. It is now my most used plane. Yes it is pricey, but it is worth it in my opinion."
