Japanese 2'' (50mm) Plane Blade
Product Description
This replacement blade is 2'' (50mm) wide and is designed for use with Stanley-style No. 4 and No. 5 hand planes. It is compatible with a wide range of tools, including vintage Stanley, and Record models, as well as more recent planes from manufacturers such as Lie-Nielsen, Veritas, and WoodRiver. (Chip-breaker not included.)
Each blade is made using traditional Japanese forging methods commonly associated with edge tools such as chisels and plane irons. The cutting layer is made from Blue Paper Steel, laminated to a softer mild-steel backing. This construction allows for a hard cutting edge supported by a tougher, more flexible body.
The fine grain structure of Blue Paper Steel enables a very sharp edge, while the laminated design helps reduce brittleness. Compared with typical western steels such as O1 and A2, the material is harder, which can contribute to longer edge retention, although it may still be sharpened without excessive difficulty due to the softer backing.
Because only a thin layer of hard steel is present at the cutting edge, less material needs to be removed during sharpening. The blades are produced in small batches by experienced makers rather than through large-scale manufacturing processes.
