Product Description

A chop axe from Gransfors Bruk for hewing bowls and other wooden objects, artistic wood carving and architectural work. The characteristic curved shape of the cutting edge, carried well above the head’s eye, the position of the edge in proportion to the handle, the rather thick bit and the big angle of the wide bevelled face makes the axe a good carving tool. You "cut on the bevelled face" with curved movements. The axe pattern, based on old Swedish carving techniques, was originally developed by Wille Sundqvist, master craftsman and author of Swedish Carving Techniques in cooperation with craftsman adviser Onni Linnanheimo. The axe has since been updated (read more below) in collaboration with master craftsmen Wille Sundqvist.

We also stock this carving axe with the edge grinded specifically for right handed or left handed carving. The idea is that the long, slightly concave bevel registers against the timber, allowing you to feel the cut, which provides excellent support when carving.

Updated Design
The asymmetric right or left handed grinds have been changed by Gransfors Bruk so they closer reflect the original design from Wille Sundqvist. The old 'handed' axes used to have a very shallow bevel on the opposite side to the main bevel, almost like a side axe. The Wille Sundqvist design has removed the very shallow bevel with a much steeper angle, that makes the axe more controllable.

Left Grind (normally selected by right handed users)
Short bevel face on the right side of the edge, if the axe is held in the right hand with the handle down and head up, with the edge facing away from you. The left side  the edge has a longer, slightly concave bevel face.

Right Grind (normally selected by left handed users)
Short bevel face on the left side of the edge, if the axe is held in the left hand with the handle down and head up, with the edge facing away from you. The right side of the edge has a longer, slightly concave bevel face.

Double Grind - remains unchanged. Equal bevel either side of the axe. This is not handed so is equally popular with right and left handed users.

The axe has a 4 1/3'' (11cm) face and a 14'' (37cm) hickory handle and weighs 2.2lb (1kg).
The handle is "rugged" to give a good grip.
Book and protective leather sheath included.
