Product Description

From the middle of the 19th century to when the chainsaw took over the forestry industry a hundred years later, double edged axes were mainly used by forest workers in Canada and the United States. The advantage of these axes was that wor kers could sharpen each edge differently. The forestry worker only needed to carry one axe with them while having two edges. Usually, the axe had a thinner edge for felling and a slightly more robust edge for limbing.

The double-edged axe became so common that it became a symbol for professional forestry workers in North America. They often worked and lived for months on end, far away from people and settlements. The workers didn't have a lot to do for fun either. In their limited spare time, they would have fun trying to hit a bullseye in someone's log.

Nowadays, these axes are seldom used in forestry, but instead for a fun pastime - axe throwing. Competitions such as the Swedish and Nordic axe-throwing championships are arranged by, among others, the Swedish Axe Throwing Association.

Both edges are identical and the centre of gravity and handle are carefully positioned so that the axe rotates well in flight. The dimensions and design of the axe comply with the rules for axe throwing.

The Double Bit Axe can also be used as a working axe in the forest, although this is rare nowadays. In this case it should be longer, which is why the axe is also available with an 89 cm handle with a flared end (so it doesn't leave your hand!).

490-1: Handle length is 75cm (29''), edge length is 16cm and weight is 2.1kg.

490-2: Handle length is 89cm (35"), edge length is 16cm and weight is 2.4kg.

Book and protective leather sheath included. Sheath in vegetable-tanned leather.
