These chisels are made from blue steel in the Sanjo region of Japan. They are blacksmith made chisels and will require some fettling (i.e the cutting edge might need to be squared up, but nothing major!), but once this is done you will have a chisel for life. Finding a honing guide that will fit Japanese chisels is somewhat troublesome, we have tested most of our honing guides with a range of these chisels and found that the Blue Spruce honing guide is the only one that will hold a Japanese chisel firmly in place and hone at 25 degrees.

The high carbon-steel edge guarantees perfect sharpness and precision and is backed by a body of softer iron - a perfect 'shock absorber'. This backing iron is "folded" and then etched in acid to reveal the distinctive damascas pattern which is particularly attractive in the wider chisels.

Suminagashi series are made in small batches by a small cooperative of blacksmiths from the Niigata area (around Sanjo).

Beautifully balanced with traditional red oak handles.

Single, double or triple hollow ground depending on chisel width.
