Blue Spruce Toolworks

Blue Spruce Toolworks designs, manufactures and sells only the finest quality hand tools for the discriminating woodworker. Blue Spruce tools are a return to the cabinet shops of old, where beautiful works were created by craftsmen working quietly and skillfully, with hand tools at a sturdy bench. In fact it was the superlative plane maker Konrad Sauer who put Classic Hand Tools on to these tools when Mike Hancock was visiting Konrad's workshop near Toronto.

Blue Spruce Toolworks are in Oregon, USA

We have stock of the small & large marking knives, awls & the 3 tool Craftmans Sets. The tools are available in cocobolo, African blackwood and in curly maple. These tools make wonderful gifts and are attractively boxed. Blue Spruce also make a fine selection of dovetail, fishtail, skew and paring chisels (please see our chisel section for further details).

Classic Hand Tools are Blue Spruce Toolwork's exclusive UK outlet. We welcome enquiries for special commissioned sets of tools to include the various chisels in the Blue Spruce toolworks range.

Please note that not all options all currently available. For anything specific please call on 01473 784 983 or email sales@classichandtools.com

Blue Spruce Marking Knives
Ref: SMK1/LMK1

Marking knives are used in place of a pencil to cut very precise layout lines into the work piece. The lines are very easy to see and help ensure accurate saw cuts when sawing precision joinery. The incised mark also works as an excellent reference for making final paring cuts.

A Blue Spruce marking knife will become an indispensable and treasured addition to your tool cabinet. The small marking knife is designed for general use in stock up to ¾" thick. It excels in marking out dovetail joints in small casework, drawers, jewellery boxes and other fine, detailed work. The large marking knife is designed for larger stock and larger scale casework generally over ¾" thick. It is also nice for those woodworkers with larger hands and who want a more substantial handle and heft to the marking knife.

The small double bevel marking knife has a blade 1/32" thick by 5/16" wide with an overall length of 6-3/4". It is sized for the majority of marking needs in smaller scale projects like boxes, drawers and casework.

The larger double bevel marking knife has a blade 1/16" thick by 1/2" wide and an overall length of 8-1/4". The larger size is most suitable for projects involving joinery such as mortise and tenons, dovetails in thicker stock and overall layout tasks.

The marking knife blades are made from A-2 tool steel hardened to 60-62 Rc, which can develop an extremely keen and durable edge.

Different projects can demand different marking solutions. Many times a single bevel spear point blade is best, sometimes you may need a larger, more rigid blade and other times may call for a scratch awl to trace around curves.

You can now choose the blade style that fits your specific marking need and easily install it into your marking handle. A custom wallet keeps everything protected and in order, with room for additional blades in the future. All blades are made from high carbon steel alloy and are easy to hone and maintain a fine cutting edge. The handle features our classic design in finely turned wood with a stainless steel insert, knurled ferrule and blade support. The wallet is hand crafted in the USA from a premium waxed canvas with a foam backed suede interior for maximum protection of your blades.

This is a starter package consisting of five of the most useful blades, three collets to hold and support the blades, a handle turned from a variety of different woods and a ferrule either in natural stainless or coated with a black ceramic coating. Included are a classic .032 inch thick spear point blade, a.020 inch thick ultra thin spear point blade, a .062 inch thick larger, heavy duty spear point blade, a .062 inch thick joiners style blade and a 1/8" diameter scratch awl point.

Blue Spruce Scratch Awls
Ref: SSA1/LSA1

The small scratch awl has an overall length of about 6 inches. It is designed for detail work and for starting holes for hinge screws in small projects such as jewelry boxes. The point is conical which makes a nice clean hole and separates the fibres allowing the maximum holding power for small screws.

The large scratch awl (brad awl) has a much more robust construction than the small scratch awl and is capable of taking taps from a mallet to create larger screw holes. The hardened, high carbon point is 3/16 inch in diameter at the large section and tapers to the point after about 3 inches. This large awl can be ordered with a standard conical point or with four ground flats that convert it into a "birdcage" awl. These sharp flats help sever the wood fibres and ream the hole as you twist the awl rather than compressing them like a standard conical point.

If you plan to use the large awl primarily for starting larger screw holes, order the birdcage tip. If you plan to use the awl primarily for marking or starting smaller screw holes, order the standard point.

The overall length of the large scratch awl is 7 inches overall with a 2½ inch high carbon steel, hardened point.
