David's lovely partner Pat coined the "Stardust" description when she was describing his collection of hand tools. We have helped to select the tools that we think will be of greatest interest to those of you who respected and enjoyed David's teaching over such a long period of time.

Product Description

A Colen Clenton cutting gauge in spectacularly figured Australian blackwood.

8" long with interference angle that induces a roll anti-clockwise in the arm, thus clamping the arm in the head both vertically and horizontally. This also allows gentle but deliberate arm release i.e when you undo the knob, it lets go without the need for tapping.. When unlocked, the arms drops free without the need to tap it. This makes it much easier to adjust the fence precisely.

The locking knob locates on a brass thread support not timber. The fence has inlaid brass wear strip. Recess for cutter.

This Clenton cutting gauge has a single adjustable high-speed steel cutter.

"Colen Clenton gauges ... have serious glamour! They are wonderfully designed and engineered for several lifetimes of hard work...These gauges are beautifully fashioned and a pleasure to use" - Furniture & Cabinetmaking, November 2001

".... The locking mechanism is extremely smooth, positive and cunning. On close inspection you see that the fine threaded locking screw twists the stem in its rectangular hole. Thus, when locked, there is no play in either direction and the stem is always held square to the stock. (The main design fault of traditional English marking gauges is that the stock inevitably wobbles or is too tight in one plane. I wish the manufacturers here would pay attention to this point)." - David Charlesworth, Furniture & Cabinetmaking, January 2003

A stunning tool indeed.

We suspect this was one of the tools that David reviewed for Furniture & Cabinetmaking nearly 20 years ago as we supplied them to him from Classic Hand Tools.
