Veritas Wile Plane Hammer
Ref: 50K5605

Making fine adjustments to plane-blade position is easier with the right tool, and few can compare to the finely made plane hammers of Richard Wile, a hobbyist woodworker from Nova Scotia.

Based on Wile's design, this hammer is machined in our shop to have the same elegant proportions as the original, giving it a weight and balance that feel right in the hand. The small brass head, only 5/8" in diameter and weighing 3 oz, allows precise, delicate adjustments to the blade. The opposite end has a 13/16" diameter face made of Delrin (a strong, rigid plastic) that is belled to distribute the force of strikes on wooden surfaces. The torrefied maple handle is 10-7/8" long.

A tool that is as pleasing in the hand as it is to the eye. An excellent fine hammer with many uses around the shop.

Veritas Journeyman's Brass Mallet
Ref: 05E1401

This mallet can be used with a traditional grip or it can be nestled in the palm of your hand to exactly control the force used, a position preferred by carvers and sculptors or anyone doing work finer than mortising.

Unique to this type of mallet, the brass head has a blind threaded connection rather than a through hole for the handle; this gives the same feel and force to the 1-5/8" diameter top as the sides. The final turning of the handle is done after the handle is mounted, ensuring a perfectly smooth transition between brass head and cherry wood handle.

At 1¼ lb with an overall length of 6", it is as effective as it is graceful.

Veritas Cabinetmaker's Mallet
Ref: 05E1501

Wooden mallets are well suited to shop work such as driving chisels or larger carving tools. Although they tend to be bulky, the wooden striking faces are much kinder to tool handles than steel-face hammers.

Inspired by a vintage tool in the Lee Valley collection, this mallet has the best features of both wood and metal and is a direct substitute for a carpenter's mallet. The cast brass head has the mass and small size typical of a metal hammer. The 1½" diameter hardwood inserts provide wooden striking faces so you can strike chisels without mushrooming the handles. Since a cabinetmaker's mallet is used primarily with wrist action, the flat faces are in planes that intersect the handle tip, so the face is 90° to the arc of swing to prevent glancing blows. You can also choke up on the handle for work requiring greater finesse such as fine carving.

With two striking faces you can keep one smooth and clean for general work. The other face can be used for more aggressive tasks such as driving out bolts, pins, etc., without peening the ends. The 18 oz head is fitted with an 11" long hardwood handle.
