The aim of the event is to introduce serious hobbyists and enthusiasts to hand tools and techniques. You will have the opportunity to discuss many aspects of hand tool work with acknowledged experts in a friendly relaxed environment. You can also buy some of the best hand tools available from leading hand tool manufacturers including Lie Nielsen, Veritas, Blue Spruce Toolworks, Clifton, Starrett, The Great British Tool Co, Auriou and more.  Internationally renowned Tool Auctioneer David Stanley will be on hand to advise on hand tool values plus West Dean tutors and other short course providers can furnish you with ideas for a week or two learning new skills.  Planemakers Karl Holtey & Bill Carter make rare public appearances plus we have some medieval hand hewing techniques on show courtesy of Steve Woodley.

Deneb Pulchalski

Deneb Pulchalski

Deneb has been working with wood for over 25 years as a carpenter, boat builder and furniture maker. He received formal training in furniture making and design at the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine, first as a student then as an assistant instructor, and finally as an artist in residence. Years of teaching and demonstrating have presented an opportunity to hone and polish hand skills and the ability to share these skills with others

John Lloyd

John Lloyd

John was awarded the City & Guilds of London Institute First Prize for Advanced Studies in Furniture for Furniture Making and Antique Restoration. He is a full member of the British Antique Furniture Restorers’ Association and commissions include work from Sotheby’s, Christies and St Paul’s Cathedral. He also writes monthly articles in Furniture and Cabinet Making magazine.

       

Mark Bennett

Mark Bennett

Mark combines traditional woodworking techniques with contemporary craftsmanship, producing handmade bespoke wooden furniture and interiors. He has an extensive knowledge of wood and specialises in unusually figured boards and non-commercial timbers from local sources. Mark studied Architecture and Interior Design at the Royal College of Art, receiving an MA in 1999.

James Mursell

James Mursell

James is a full-time Windsor Chair Maker, who divides his time between making chairs to commission, teaching chair making and writing for woodworking magazines; Good Woodworking and Furniture and Cabinet Making. James also makes and sells a range of spokeshaves and travishers which he designed for use specifically in chair making.

Philip Edwards

Philip Edwards is the craftsman behind Philly Planes who are reviving the lost art of wooden plane making in the U.K. From his Dorset workshop he makes each individual plane by hand. His work has been published in various wood working magazines.

 

Robert Ingham

Robert teaches at West Dean College as well as having his own business, Robert Ingham Designs.  He makes one-off pieces to commission and for exhibition both in this country and abroad.

Rasp and woodcarving manufacturer. Michel's hand stitched rasps and rifflers are the worlds best.

Bill Carter

Bill Carter

Bill served his apprenticeship as a Carpenter & Joiner. He began making planes in the 1970's, these were always made out of timber. In 1983 he made his first metal plane and in 1987, began making planes full time.  Bill makes all his planes by hand using only hand tools. His speciality are miniature mitre planes, using the brass backs of disguarded tenon saws.  Bill is self taught and has never had any metal work tuition, It's all been learnt by trial and error.

David Barron

David Barron

David is a furniture maker with a long standing interest in making hand tools. He started selling a range of wooden planes, hammers, knives and dovetails guides about a year ago at Yandles. These are the tools he uses in his cabinet making rather than just for the mantle piece and they have proved very popular. Demonstrations of dovetailing and hand planing will go on throughout the show and visitors will be encouraged to have a go themselves.

Steve Woodley

Steve Woodley

is a Forester, Arborist and green woodworker based in Essex. Whilst running his own forestry training business his is also extremely committed to keeping old timber skills alive. Working almost exclusively with Gransfor Bruks axes supplied by Classic Hand Tools Steve is the Hand Crafted Timber Company specialising in timber conversion using medieval techniques. Keen to educate the public about this all but lost art form Steve can be seen regularly giving public displays of timber hewing throughout the southeast of England.
A recent project was a collaborative venture with Traditional oak carpentry and Westover woodlands in the construction of a fifth century Anglo Saxon farm house at West Stow Anglo Saxon Village. A stunning earth fast building using hand split and hewn oak employing traditional peg construction throughout. Working with tool designs dating from the seventh century Steve manages to capture a beauty in his finished work that the modern saw mill fails to reproduce.

   
   
WEST DEAN COLLEGE
WEST DEAN COLLEGE present a display of work from both the Short Course Programme and full-time post-graduate programmes in Conservation and Making of Furniture and Related Objects and Stringed Musical Instruments.
 

The Short Courses team will be on hand to discuss the wide variety of wood based courses offered in West Dean’s programme. These include furniture making, woodcarving and turning, gilding, picture framing and musical instruments making.  The display will focus on the range of courses for aspiring furniture makers from complete beginners through to advanced makers, designing and making their own aspirations and unique projects, alongside work by two of the tutors Tom Kealy and Toby Winteringham.

The Diploma courses will showcase project work on producing ripple mouldings from on Moxon’s mechanic exercises and pole lathe work, alongside stringed instruments researched and made with demonstrations on scroll carving.

A short tour of the college workshops and facilities will be offered each afternoon at 1.30pm.  Places are limited and tickets are available on our stand only.
