Veritas Saws and Saw Guides
Veritas Dovetail Saw
Ref: VT0501
When we first saw this saw (!) we were a bit dubious but it has quickly grown on us. It is very comfortable. it is very affordable, it cuts well and can be re-sharpened. Not for the purists maybe but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is what those clever chaps from Veritas say about this saw....
The Veritas dovetail saw is an innovative blend of tradition and technology. It incorporates all of the critical characteristics of a classic fine joinery saw, yet is executed using modern production processes and state-of-the-art materials.
The 9-1/4" long, 0.020" thick high-carbon steel blade features 14 rip-cut teeth per inch, having 0.003" of set per side. The teeth have a rake angle of 14°, and an included angle of 60°. Depth of cut is about 1-9/16".
What really stands out is the revolutionary spine; it is injection moulded under high pressure using an advanced material, incorporating stainless-steel powder for weight, glass fibre for stiffness, and a polymer resin binder.
The blade and stainless-steel handle-mounting bolt are completely over-moulded, creating a solid one-piece blade/spine/mount assembly. A single brass fastener secures the bubinga handle, the shape of which has been derived from antique saws in the Lee Valley collection.
The saw has excellent balance, cuts easily and true, and has a comfortable pistol grip that makes the saw feel as if its an extension of your arm. Measures 14-1/4" long overall.

Veritas Flush Cutting Saws
Ref: VK3
Traditionally used for the rapid trimming of plugs and dowels flush with a surface, the Veritas flush-cutting saws can be used where you want to cut off a projection without damaging the surrounding or adjoining face. This is possible because the teeth are set one way only
The 22 tpi Japanese tooth-pattern blade cuts aggressively (on the pull stroke), but does not mark the surface that it is cutting next to. The thin blade is flexible and can be pressed flush to any surface, yet is rigid enough for good control.
The saw is available with teeth cut on only one edge or in a double-edged style that cuts from either side. Each is about 11-1/2" long with 4-3/4" of blade. These work like a charm.

Veritas Dovetail Saw and Guide
Ref: VT0203
Hand-cut dovetails remain the mark of the skilled cabinetmaker and a feature that buyers look for in high-end furniture. Veritas has developed a guide and saw system that lets amateurs achieve professional results. The system also allows the seasoned expert to produce dovetail joints more quickly and with less effort.
The Veritas dovetail guides, which clamp in position, hold the saw at the correct place and the correct angle for a perfect cut. 3/4" rare-earth magnets embedded in the anodized aluminum guide and covered with a layer of low-friction UHMW plastic keep the saw perfectly aligned as you cut. You still have to chop out waste from the tails and pins, but the detailed instructions give you tips on how to do this quickly and accurately.
Clamping capacity of the guides covers material from 1/4" to 1" thick. They come in the traditional ratios of 1:6 and 1:8, for softwood and hardwood respectively; however, as a result of modern glues, there is nothing stopping you from using either ratio on your choice of wood. You can also create an interesting variation by using both in a single joint.
The guides can be used with any backless saw that has approximately 0.005" of tooth set, but work best with the Veritas dovetail saw that has been designed specifically for them. The 2" x 8-1/2" blade has 22 tpi and 0.005" of tooth set. The dozuki tooth form is effective in both crosscuts and rip cuts.
