Richard Maguire Workbenches

Richard Maguire is a furniture maker who specialises in woodworking exclusively with hand tools. His workbenches have arisen from a lifelong interest in traditional woodworking techniques and old workbenches. His workbenches combine historic woodworking mythology with modern workshop requirements.

Richard first showcased his benches at the European Woodworking Show at Cressing Temple Barns in 2009. He received a very enthusiastic response to his workmanship from a discerning audience of woodworkers.

This extract from Richard's web site eloquently sums up his approach to his work.....

My passion for traditional woodwork inspired me to set up in this business. My aim is to build the best workbenches in the world and so I never compromise on quality for anything. I have selected materials and bench hardware which I believe lives up to this aim and mixed together with an extremely high level of craftsmanship my benches are designed to last a lifetime and more. I love what I do so you can be assured that no shortcuts are ever taken. I run my business in an honest and open manner and do everything possible to make your experience positive. Top quality can never be cheap however I believe that my benches are priced to offer exceptional value for money, and if you consider the large size of the timber sections that I use along with the complex traditional joinery I am sure that you will agree.

For me my workbench is the most important tool when making furniture and I rely on it to provide a stable, rack free surface that can hold my work in any position with incredible speed. I believe that a good workbench can enable speed and efficiency within woodworking whilst agreat workbench can inspire passion, enjoyment and take your woodworking to a whole new level."

Classic Hand Tools are very proud to have been selected by Richard Maguire to represent him exclusively in the sale of The Maguire 'Workhorse' and The Maguire ‘Artisan’. The 'Artisan' bench can be inspected at our showroom in Suffolk and on the road at various woodworking shows and demonstrations throughout the year (please sign up to our newsletter to keep abreast of show dates and locations).

Other bench styles including the Roubo, Dominy & Modern Workbench are available direct from Richard Maguire.
The Maguire 'Workhorse'

Designed to be both extremely rugged and versatile the Maguire ‘Workhorse’ takes inspiration from the 18th century designs of the craftsman Roubo.

This workbench is constructed entirely from kiln dried ash and with a top thickness of 90mm and huge 135mm x 88mm legs this is possibly the heaviest bench available on the market today.

The base trestles are traditionally jointed with massive drawbored mortice and tenons to create a robust and rack-free under carriage and the top is laminated from full length segments.

Two traditional vices have been brought up to date to combine versatile clamping with modern speed and efficiency:

The Leg Vice - This face vice offers a large clamping capacity along with speed and simplicity of use. A beautiful hand turned wooden screw gives a fast feed speed and unbeatable grip thanks to the large 62mm thread diameter and coarse two threads per inch pitch. At the bottom a steel shaft runs within a bearing to ensure the vice always runs smooth and clamps without the need for any pin.

Long work pieces can be clamped in the leg vice and supported along the front of the workbench using the sliding board jack.

The new Maguire Wagon vice is now included as standard. This discreet tail vice uses a dog block that travels within the bench top to allow pieces to be trapped between two bench dogs, providing a reliable means for holding timber down ready for its face to be worked. Two rows of dog holes enable the full width and length of the bench top to be used.

The bench top is constructed in two sections to allow a full length ‘flip stop’ to be included down its centre. This stop can be left flush with the bench top so that it remains un-noticeable when it is not required but within seconds can be flipped over to protrude the surface. Although a simple addition to the workbench this stop has many uses, for example butting work against while using a biscuit jointer or combined with a bench dog can allow you to very quickly plane all of the faces of a board, and is even sturdy enough to support work for scrub planing.

This combination of traditional vices teamed with stops and dogs allows the user to find a quick and stable means of holding work of all sizes for a very fluent and satisfying work flow. Set up to take on any task; hand or power, this bench truly is a real ’Workhorse’.

A special blend of oils is applied to all benches to give a durable, hard wearing finish and to nourish the wood.

Workbench is supplied with two brass bench dogs.

The Maguire 'Workhorse'
The Maguire 'Artisan'

The Maguire ‘Artisan’ is the ideal companion for the woodworker who often works with wide panels, carcases and drawers. It is a very sturdy workbench with enormous clamping potential.

This workbench is constructed entirely from kiln dried ash. The base trestles are traditionally jointed with massive drawbored mortice and tenons to create a robust and rack-free under carriage and the top is laminated from full length segments.

Choice of face vice:

The Twin Screw Vice - With 610mm (24”) of space between the two screws this face vice is capable of handling some of the largest work. Wide panels can be clamped perfectly flat for tasks such as cutting dovetails and even fully constructed drawers can be held securely whilst the faces are planed. This vice can clamp at a slight taper if required for uneven work pieces.
Two beautiful hand turned wooden screws give a fast feed speed and unbeatable grip thanks to the large 62mm thread diameter and coarse two threads per inch pitch, and both of the nuts can be adjusted to ensure that the vice can always run true.

OR

The Single Screw Face vice - With 305mm (12”) of space between the screw and shaft this vice is smaller than the twin screw but with only one wooden screw used to open it, it is very simple and fast to operate.

The Wagon Vice (standard version) - This discreet tail vice uses a dog block that travels within the bench top to allow pieces to be trapped between two bench dogs, providing a reliable means for holding timber down ready for its face to be worked. Two rows of dog holes enable the full width and length of the bench top to be used.

The bench top is constructed in two sections to allow a full length ‘flip stop’ to be included down its centre. The Maguire 'Artisan'
Richard Maguire Wagon Vice Ref: RMWV

Richard Maguire has made it his mission to create a great English made wagon vice that he is proud to install in to his benches. These are now available to purchase for use in your own workbench builds.

‘Made in England’ - Richard wanted this vice to represent England and its heritage of quality industrial introduction. The handle combines polished bronze with aged steel; it’s patina is forced by hand so that each vice is individual with a sense of age and long life. Above all Richard has aimed to create a vice that would be addictive to use, touch and turn.

‘Perfect Clamping’ - Tail vices can be notorious for pushing your work up as you try to obtain a grip between bench dogs, leaving you having to faff about knocking the ends back down. This wagon vice has been built with precise tolerances which will simply not allow for lifting, and instead pulls the work down when tightened. Working with such tight tolerances requires materials of the highest quality; teflon coated bushes run of hardened steel shafts and the result is super smooth travel!

Full installation instructions are supplied
