Hock Blades for Bench Planes Ref: BPA

Ron Hock has earned an international reputation for the quality of his plane blades. Ron incorporates the same basic principles as used by 19th Century edge tools makers in his high carbon steel blades and updates these principles in his A2 cryogenically treated steel.

High carbon steel blades are easier to sharpen and will give you a fantastic cuting edge. However they will require more frequent sharpening.

Hock Chipbreakers Ref: HCB

To maximize your plane's performance, a thicker chip breaker (cap iron) can stabilize the blade's cutting edge reducing vibration and chatter. HOCK Chip Breakers are 3mm thick (.118"), almost twice as thick as a stock chip breaker and they come with with a knurled cap screw.

Hock Block Plane Blades Ref: BLA

Classic Hand tools offer four block plane blades all of which are 3/32" thick x 4 1/4" long. They will fit Stanley, Record and many other block planes.

Which HOCK blade do I need for my Block Plane?

We offer four different block plane blades in two different alloys.

The first determinant is the blade width, either 1 3/8" or 1 5/8". Check what width of blade you need as your starting point.

The next is the width of the slot in the centre of the blade. It will be either about 7/16" wide or about 5/8" wide.

Then choose whether you want your blade in High Carbon Steel (HC) or Cryogenically Treated A2 Tool Steel.

Wooden Spokeshave Blades Ref: SPO

These are the two-threaded-post style carbon steel blades and yes, the brass thumbnuts are included.

The small blade has a 11/2" cutting edge and is 2 1/2" by 7/16" overall.

The larger blade has a 2 3/4" cutting edge and is 4 7/16" x 5/8" overall.

Hock Replacement blades for metal spokeshaves (Type 151) - cryogenically treated A2 blades

Perhaps the most dramatic improvement can be realised by accurizing and tuning your Spokeshave. It is a mediocre tool as it comes from the factory, but with a quality blade and a little fussing, it becomes a versatile and sensitive tool capable of doing fine work. Stanley and Record Style with the dog-bone shaped adjuster slots.

The blades for the Stanley No.12 and No.112 Scraper Planes are 3/32" thick by 2-7/8" wide and 5" long with a 45 degree bevel on the cutting edge. Hardened for a balance of long edge life and burr "rollability"

No.80 replacement blade (also fits the Record 080) measures 1/16" X 2-3/4" X 3" long

No.81 replacement blade measures 1/16" X 2-1/2" x 3-7/8" long.

Burnishers Ref: BR375

Hock burnishers are hardened (Rc64) and polished high carbon tool-steel rods that stand up well to constant use on scraper edges. Most others are not hard enough for this demanding application.

Hock Shellac Ref: DOF-SL

Hock shellac comes in three colours of flakes in one-pound bags:

Shellac is a natural resin secreted by the Lac Bug. This resinous secretion forms a protective cocoon for the developing Lac Bug larvae. Hock Shellac is imported from India where the resin is harvested from tree branches then cleaned and processed into the "dewaxed" flakes that you have before you.

Among traditional wood finishers, dewaxed shellac is preferred as the best protection for fine wood surfaces. Shellac flakes are dissolved in "spirit", simple denatured alcohol, to make a finish that is considerably more "shop friendly" than other, petroleum-based finishes. A shellac finish becomes hard, durable, non-yellowing, and easy to repair. And it's nontoxic. In fact, shellac is used as a coating on pills, candy and fruits.

Shellac was the preferred finish for the highest quality furniture in the last century. Its fast drying-time speeds your production and minimizes dust in the finish. Hock Shellac lets you build up many thin coats, enhancing the beauty of the wood without obscuring the grain. Your wood surface looks clean, crisp and natural. Since each application dissolves part of the last coat, scratches or surface blemishes can be repaired perfectly.

Our "Orange" and "Blonde" colors of shellac allow subtle tinting to enhance certain woods, match dissimilar woods, or blend a repair with the original finish. Also, Hock Shellac forms an excellent vapor barrier that prevents moisture from migrating to or from the wood. Because it is dissolved in alcohol, shellac is the preferred, sandable sealer coat under other water or solvent based topcoats. It is often used to seal oily knots and other surface blemishes that could bleed through and stain the final finish.
