Broad Axe 1700 484 Ref: GA-BA484

An early form of the Scandinavian double-bearded broad axe, with a solid forged socket typical of those made from the Middle Ages until the 18th century. The head is symmetrical and fitted onto a straight handle. The strongly curved cutting edge and wide bevel make this axe ideally suited for joint work and for squaring logs and beams. The concentration of weight near the cutting edge improves directional stability during use. This stunning axe is hand-forged by Master Blacksmith Lars Enander, one head at a time.

Similar to the No. 1700 below but without the forged socket. Universal Broad Axes have symmetrical, double-bevelled blades and straight handles. They are mainly used in conjunction with mortising axes for making wood joints.

Two Lugged Chopping Axe Ref: GA-501

A Swedish axe developed during the 7th century and first used on the island of Gotland and in central parts of Sweden. The two lugs below the eye give the axe its characteristic look. The edge is short and straight. The chopping axe is thought to have been used primarily for felling trees as well as for timbering when building houses and boats. Axes with a short edge, about 7 cm long and weighing about 1 kg had been used for felling and lopping trees right up into the 20th century. This replica, forged by hand, is based on an 11th century axe discovered in Mästermyr on Gotland. The axe was found lying in a carpenter's toolbox, which indicates that it belonged to a versatile craftsman. The original axe is exhibited at the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm.

Four Lugged Chopping Axe Ref: GA-505

A Norwegian axe from the 7th century which was developed into a western Scandinavian type. It is characterized by its four eye-lugs: two above and two below the eye. The axe has a relatively wide, curved edge.

Archaeological findings indicate that this type of axe probably formed part of people's personal equipment. It was used both as a hatchet and as a working axe, but also as weapon in battle before the actual battleaxe was developed.

This replica, forged by hand, is based on an axe dating back to the 9th century, and was found in Skåne in the southern part of Sweden. The original axe is exhibited at the Museum Kulturen in Lund.

This style of axe was developed in the Nordic countries during the 10th century. It is characterized by its four eye-lugs: two above and two below the eye. The axe has a wide, thin, curved blade with an accentuated steel edge.

The battleaxe was common in the Nordic countries during the Viking Age and was considered the height of the fashion. The axe was primarily used in battle, but also signified the power and dignity of its owner.

The replica, forged by hand, is based on an axe used during the Viking Age. The original is exhibited at Jämtlands Läns Museum in Östersund.

A Northern European axe from the 12th century. Axes with eye-sockets started to appear in the early Middle Ages in Europe. They had a long sturdy eye-socket and also a wide edge. It was used for timbering and to split logs, it might also have been used for some carpentry. This replica is based on several axe types from the early Middle Ages.

Two Lugged Bearded Axe Ref: GA-503

The wide-bearded axe was one of the most important tools of the Viking Age. It was primarily used for hewing the beams and planks needed for building boats and houses (skiftesverkhus). The head of this axe is of iron and has a forge-welded carbon steel cutting edge and double bevelled face. Patterned after an axe found on Gotland Island.

The two extra long beards of this axe make it very efficient at hewing beams and boat planks. The head is offset to the left (right bevel); the handle is slightly curved and textured for a better grip. Based on a historical axe on display at the Roskilde Viking Museum.

Since ancient history, axes were used as both tools and weapons, apart from serving as symbols of status and cult items. This is evident from the many burial site excavations where axes have been found. In some Central European graves, a special model called the Francisca has been found.

Burial site discoveries have also taught us that the Francisca was common during the period 500 - 750 AD and that it was initially used by the Franks. It is clear that the form of the axe is developed for it to function as an effective throwing weapon.
