Froes are splitting tools. We offer two lengths and 2 makes here. The Gransfors Bruks froe is the heavy duty option with a 12" blade and hickory handle.

Adzes - 4 on offer here from Gransfors Bruks (2 long handled and 2 short handled) in Sweden and 4 short handled adzes from Auriou Toolworks in France.

Chairmakers Spoon Bits - made by Clico (Sheffield), tapered and parallel sided spoon bits for chairmakers. The Veritas Tapered Reamer Pro ideal for drilling through holes when using wedge tenons.

Froe 12" Edge 487 Ref: GA487

This is the tool used to split shingles, shakes and lumber. It is struck with a wooden maul or mallet, pounding the blade into the end of short logs, then quickly pulled back or pushed with the handle to split the wood. It has a 12" iron blade with an 18" hickory handle and weighs 4lbs. Please note that this tool is not provided with a grain-leather sheath but does come with a hickory handle.

Difficult to find froes these days. The 9" comes with a beech handle (6" is not supplied with a handle) and are made in Lincolnshire, England by Raymond Iles of the famous Iles clan.

This adze has an axe style head with a flat blade for easy cutting. The 3" blade is slightly swept. Weight incl. handle approx 2lb with a handle length of 7". The adze is fitted with a tight-grained hickory handle and provided with a protective leather sheath.

This premium Swedish adze features a hand forged axe-style head with a nicely drooped blade for easy, efficient cutting. Grasp its 25" hickory axe handle near the end for use with an erect stance and a heavy swing, or hold it just as comfortably 4" to 6" from the end for a compact, fully controlled swing with your elbows braced against your knees. Clifton 250 Tapered Spoon Bit Ref: TSB

This is used by a chairmaker for boring or reaming holes in the seats or arms of chairs, in particular Windsor-style chairs.
Hand forged from high carbon steel.
The bit should be honed using a slipstone on the inner edge.
Start boring vertically, when the bit has "bitten" it can be tilted to drill a hole at any desired angle.
The spoon portion of the bit is 125mm(5") long and 30mm(1.3/16") wide at its widest, with a square tang.

Veritas Tapered Reamer Pro Ref: VJ6101

Designed for use in a hand brace, our pro reamer offers excellent control and good cutting capability for general woodworking. It is particularly useful for tapering through holes where you want to be able to wedge tenons, such as in chair construction.
This reamer has a cast steel alloy body, a separate spring-steel blade, and a pair of blade-adjusting set screws.

When reaming out an existing hole (7/16" to 1-3/16" in diameter), the depth can be adjusted for working soft or hard woods and the angle can be adjusted for tenon/socket fit. The body has an included angle of 12.8° to match the tenons from our Veritas® Tapered Tenon Cutters when making chair-leg socket joints.

5-5/8" long overall, with a tapered square shank for use in a two-jaw hand brace. Weighs about 8 oz. Blade is easy to sharpen
