Chris Pye Recommended Tools & More

If you refer to Chris Pye's excellent web site, click here to go to Chris' website you will find a fantastic amount of information that can be downloaded for free. His site also has a recommended list of tools by manufacturer which we replicate here for the Pfeil range of carving tools from Switzerland. Here we present his Pfeil Basic Woodcarving Set, additional small gouge set, additional large gouge set & Pfeil Lettercarving Set.
Auriou Chris Pye Basic Woodcarving Set Ref: CP-A-BWS

British carver Chris Pye began woodcarving in 1975, originally studying under master carver Gino Masero. He is a member of the prestigious Master Carvers Association.

Forge de Saint Juery, home of Auriou Toolworks in south west France has, under Chris Pye's guidance, begun producing (revised and improved) Auriou woodcarving tools - a basic set of 7 to begin with and more to follow.

The basic set of 7 tools, which is being sold as a set consists of 2 flat, 2 medium and 2 deep sweep gouges and a V tool.:

This set gives you many carving choices: deep gouges for shaping, medium for modelling, flat gouges for smoothing surfaces, and the ever-useful V tool; and with these tools you'll have the means of carving a wide range of subjects.

Auriou woodcarving tools have been among Chris Pye's favourites since he began carving. Uniquely their blades are forged by beating out a blank of steel to length before hammering the cross-section profile. This creates a very resilient grain structure in the metal which, when hardened to Rockwell 58C, underpins their great edge-holding properties.

Chris Pye has been working with Auriou on a re-design of their woodcarving tools since 2009. The new gouges have the older, 'allongee' style of blade that splays from the shoulder: they are lighter to use, the corners are more available for cutting, and their thin walls are of a uniform thickness.

Chris Pye Pfeil Basic Woodcarving Set Ref: CP-Pfeil-BSet

Beginners to carving have to choose from a wide range of tools, while not even knowing what they might want to carve - or even if they'll like it!
There is no such thing as a 'complete' set of carving tools, each carver builds up their kit according to their needs and the work they are doing.

The sets Chris Pye has selected here derive from his many years of experience - recommending carving tools to students! They represent a range of useful widths and depths (sweep/cut) as well as the indispensible V tool and skew chisel. These tools have proved to be among the most commonly used carving tools.

As you progress into different areas and find these tools inadequate, work out what you need by referring to them: narrower, deeper, bent etc and check out the profiles and details in the individual tool section. It is very common for students to buy, as their next tools, larger and smaller straight versions of the ones in the basic set. These are listed below as additional small gouges and additional large gouges.

There are a mixture of straight chisels and gouges in this set. In his book Lettercarving Chris Pye also recommends one wider (45mm) chisel but this is not available from Pfeil; cuts longer than 40mm will need to be carefully merged from narrower ones.
