Vesper Tools - Australia

"Chris Vesper is only a relative youngster but has been making tools since 1998. Having received our first consignment of tools we predict that Chris is going to have a long and distinguished career making fine hand tools. Vesper Tools compare very favourably with other fine hand tool makers from around the world" Mike Hancock - Classic Hand Tools.

Being a self taught woodworker himself, Chris Vesper has the unique ability to design and make woodworking tools that are practical to use to the highest level, and they are also finished to incredibly high standards. Each tool is an item of beauty in itself.

These tools are of the highest quality and offer excellent value for money. They are precisely fitted with brass components, stamped with the 'CV' identifying mark and hand finished.

Stunning Figured Tasmanian Blackwood is the principal timber used. Chris personally selects each piece from the island state of Tasmania, Australia, where the cold climate and rich soils produce unique timber unlike any other on earth.

All timbers chosen for use in the tools are carefully selected and dried for their useful properties in toolmaking, stability, hardness and density

All products are unconditionally guaranteed against any fault in materials and workmanship.

Vesper Tools Sliding Bevels Ref: VESP-FTB

These tools are a no-compromise solution to the problems that can beset other sliding bevels. They are a true flush locking tool with the locking screw and the blade running up the middle of the body, which is made from solid brass to eliminate timber movement problems, and held together with stainless steel screws. The lovely knurled brass screw does the locking of the blade from the end of the stock, or if you might have difficulty tightening the tool with your fingers in the conventional manner, there is a slot for a screwdriver to assist in this. This allows you to lay the bevel flat, either side down, and then set it for a reading.

Choice of 4", 7" and 10" precision ground, hardened stainless steel blade. These are precision tools, with the critical blade and edges of the stock being precision ground to flat and parallel to less than one thou' of an inch from perfect flat and parallel. The bevel comes with a beautiful figured Tasmanian blackwood infill as shown (see bevel on the right of the picture). Figured Tasmanian Blackwood. (Acacia melanoxylon) - Blackwood grows over most of the east coast of Australia, but the best timber comes from the island state of Tasmania. The cold climate and rich soils there produce a timber that is very favourable for toolmaking. It is dense, hard, stable, and has a fantastic variety of colors, mid brown right through to the darkest chocolate brown. Chris Vesper only uses highly figured Musical Instrument Grade blackwood (no straight grain timber allowed!) The figure can include ripple, mottle, raindrop, landscape and of course extreme fiddleback. Once a year Chris will go on a 'timber expedition' to Tasmania, to hand pick the blocks, boards and even stump pieces that are then cut and dried for use in the tools.

Black Red Gum Signature Series - A matching set is available as a special "Signature Series Set" with Black Red Gum infil (see left hand picture) - Black Red Gum is akin to bog oak and is between 5000-10,000 years old. It is botanically the same as the present River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) but the timber has undergone a chemical reaction that has turned it black. Black Red Gum is extremely rare and when found it is never in the form of a straight clean saw log but is usually in large fragments and hollow forms. The fragments are found buried underground in a moist, oxygen starved environment. The water contains iron oxides which react with the tannins in the timber to turn it black whilst the lack of oxygen preserves the timber. This is a very difficult timber to season but once this process has been done successfully Black Red Gum is a stable medium. This timber is unique to Australia. Signature Series orders attract a minimum 20% premium with quotation and delivery times on request. Figured Tasmanian Blackwood tools are about 6-8 weeks delivery if not in stock at Classic Hand Tools.

Vesper Tools Cutting Gauge Ref: VESP-CG

This Cutting Gauges is guaranteed to cut a clean, crisp line, both with and across the grain without wandering.

The unique shape of the head makes the gauge extremely comfortable to hold, left of right handed. This new and innovative design gives the tool perfect balance in the hand. With a 90mm extra long hardwearing brass face the tool will sit against the workpiece with no chance of undesirable inaccuracy. It also has a large diameter locking knob and all the threads are seated in brass plugs so they will never wear out. The locking knob pushes against a captive pressure plate that bears against the bar of the gauge so the timber will not be marked.

The bar is long enough to give about a 200mm marking range and the tool steel cutter drops into a recess in the head of the gauge for marking and slitting any size down to zero. With a unique 'three point lock' design in the head, the bar will not wobble or move in any direction once locked. Each gauge is finish sanded and shellac polished by hand as this has been proven to be the only way to achieve the fine finish on the curves of the tool.

Vesper Tools Joinery Knife Ref: VESP-JK

This beautifully proportioned knife is about 200mm long, with a tool steel blade that has been ground to the finest diamond point possible. The blade is bevelled on one side only making it extremely accurate against the side of a square for instance when marking out joinery. The turned handle has generous sized flats for gripping the knife comfortably and so it won't roll from where you put it.

Because it's made to be quite a solid tool it can also be used instead of a pair of skew chisels to get into corners and remove waste where a normal chisel won't reach.

To sharpen this knife, treat it much like a chisel, it is very important to keep the back of it flat, the honing angle of the bevels is not terribly critical, approximately 25 degrees.
