Scrapers & Burnishers

Scrapers may more accurately described at cutting tools as the edge is "turned up" with a hard steel rod (burnisher) to form a burr or hook which cuts into the wood to produce a fine shaving (just like a very finely set spokeshave or plane). Scrapers are used as the final cleaning up operation on hardwoods, especially cross grained or highly figured timber.

They can be shaped for convex or concave work or square. They are marvellous tools and are inexpensive additions to your tool armoury.

Scrapers can be hand held or in a holder or fixed into a metal or wooden plane or spokeshave body (see plane section).

Burnishers - Essentially hard steel rods, round, oval or triangular in shape. Starting with a square edge to your scraper (file square and hone on a sharpening stone). Run the rod along the edge with some pressure and this will raise your burr.

A pair of 6" x 2 1/2" hand scrapers made from premium, high carbon Swedish Tool Steel.

Most cabinet scrapers are sheared from spring steel, hardened to Rc38-42. These scrapers are harder (Rc48-52) and hold an edge longer. The edges are carefully milled to a square, sharp 90° ready for immediate use on fine work. For heavy-duty use, a hook must be burnished onto them. The prepared edges not only save you the initial effort of filing and stoning, but indicate the condition they should be in the next time you intend to put a hook on them.

The scrapers come in four thicknesses. The two thinnest, used for fine work, are 2" x 6" (50mm x 150mm). The two thicker ones are 2-3/8" x 6" (60mm x 150mm) and are for heavier stock removal, the 1mm scraper being suitable for paint removal. All come with edge guards and complete resharpening instructions.

There is no tool handier in the workshop than a cabinet scraper, and this holder lets you use it to maximum advantage.

Cabinet scrapers are among the most useful (and least expensive) tools in a woodworking shop. Unfortunately, many woodworkers have difficulty putting the optimum hook on a scraper for the job at hand. Since scrapers have four working edges, it is possible to make one into a highly versatile tool with each edge having a different cutting characteristic. The problem most people have is choosing the best burnishing angle and then attempting to hold the burnisher at exactly that angle.

Our Variable Burnisher eliminates the problem and makes burnishing easy. It has a carbide rod fixed in a brass hub at an angle. A knob on the face of the body lets you set any angle from 0° to 15°. You rotate the hub to the chosen angle and then lock it into position with the brass thumbscrew. Because the burnisher body is slotted, you can burnish a scraper with confidence that the angle is being maintained.

The high impact-resistant, injection-molded body has brass fittings and uses a polished carbide rod in the business section. Includes complete instructions for forming and using a variety of hook angles, as well as a milled edge scraper to practise on. Designed to perform all the functions of round, triangular and oval burnishers, this burnisher has a mirror finish to guarantee smoothly formed hooks on cabinet scrapers. The unique shape lets you apply just the right amount of pressure at each stage of the burnishing process on scrapers of all shapes. The superior surface finish is particularly important to avoid galling and hook tearing.

Veritas Scraper Burnisher for Turners Ref: VK3501

This tool turns scrapers into cutting tools. Turners who are used to using scrapers with a grinder burr will be amazed at the difference a smooth edge-hook can make. After grinding a scraper, you just deburr the flat face and roll a hook onto the edge. The pressure you use determines the size of the hook.

Two 1" long carbide burnishing rods are supplied. One is ground at 10° for burnishing scrapers with bevels of 70° or 75°. Also included is a second rod ground at 5° to burnish 75° to 80° bevel angles.

Since the burnisher (clamped in a vise or screwed to a lathe stand) lets you use your entire body for leverage, you can even put hooks on HSS scrapers, something not possible with any other burnisher.
