This is a much expanded and revised and re-titled version of an earlier (1981) work by the author, Book of the Home in Britain. Much has been written about aristocratic homes of this period, but this book deals with the kind of furnishings that a smaller or 'middle class' home would have had. A wide range of subjects are covered including heating and lighting, wall coverings, doors and doorways, staircases and colour. Items we take for granted today, e.g. door locks, window glazing, floor boards and wallpaper were all too expensive for the average Tudor householder to contemplate owning. There was much more reliance on what natural products, e.g. clay, could be obtained locally to furnish and colour houses. The author presents a collection of his own line drawings and many photographs of surviving interiors and their details.
