Auriou Stonecarving Tools - Traditional Range
I think it is true to say that nearly all stone carving tool manufacturers have long since stopped making these traditional barrel shaped tools. Why is this? Well to create this distinctive shape you must forge the whole of the tool (not just the head as in the standard range) and this requires more skill and time from the blacksmith. Auriou free forge their tools in the old traditional way and are able to forge the whole of the tool by hand. Why bother to do this? Well the business end of the tool is the same as with the standard tools but the barrel shaped body is more comfortable to use over a prolonged period. The Traditional range therefore appeals to the professional stone carvers or to those who enjoy spending quite some time on their hobby.
Auriou also make the same range of tools but with a straight octagonal body. These are referred to as Auriou Standard Stonecarving Tools (see separate section).
Classic Hand Tools are the only stockist of Auriou Stone Carving Tools in the UK. |

These tools have a special function. The shape of the blade is similar to that of a straight chisel but these chisels have been strengthened where the blade joins the shank, (they have a lozenge shape), so that you can work square on to the stone.

AURIOU TRADTIONAL RANGE - RONDELLE CHISEL
Rondelle chisels are used for smoothing out the texture left by the toothed chisels and prepares the stone for finishing. These are shaping tools. Essentially their use is to achieve the concave shapes, to emphasise a relief by hollowing out cavities or to undercut the stone.

AURIOU TRADITIONAL RANGE - POINT CHISEL
The point is the workhorse of the chisels. It is used for roughing out and removing material quickly.
Auriou point chisels are hardened steel which work well on softer stones and marble. For harder stones like granite, carbide tipped chisels are required.
Remember on soft stone, the point chisel can leave a 'stone bruise', or white mark, when it has gone deeper into the stone than your intended surface. Care must be taken not to 'bury' the chisel into the stone. These unintended white marks will show up when the stone is polished. These bruises can only be removed by carving or filing down into the stone past the depth of the bruise.
